Cotton bed sheets vs. polyester/microfiber bed sheets: Cotton is breathable, antistatic, not lint/hair magnet. Nothing breathes better than natural fiber. Unlike cotton, polyester fabric tends to be hot, is not breathable and can cause excessive sweating. Cotton fabric is also antistatic (has no electrical buildup and does not stick to the skin). Polyester bed sheets may shoot sparks and cling to the skin as well as to other bedding. Unlike cotton, polyester tends to collect lint and hair including pet hair that often remains even after laundering. More importantly, man-made fabrics like polyester (microfiber) can exacerbate skin sensitivity issues and cause allergic reaction because of the chemicals used to make synthetic fiber.
Do not get fooled by other sellers’ claims of “high count Egyptian quality” or “Egyptian comfort” sheets or microfiber sheets. These type of claims have nothing to do with the Egyptian or any other cotton. You will be getting cheap and often scratchy 100% polyester. Polyester/microfiber does not allow air to pass through and often causes sweating and overheating. Some people describe the so called “Egyptian comfort” as “sleeping in a plastic bag.”
Note that the thread count alone is not a good indicator of the softness or durability. Thread count measures to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch. In many cases the manufacturers use thinner threads to hit a higher count. Therefore the sheets of a better-quality fiber with a lower thread count may feel softer and last longer than the sheets with a higher thread count.
