Camel Wool Comforters
Camel wool comforters (duvet inserts) are warmer and lighter than the sheep wool comforters due to the hollow core of camel hair. We offer camel hair filled comforters in multiple weights (gsm): lightweight camel wool comforters (250 gsm), all season camel wool comforters (400 gsm) and extra weight camel wool comforters (600 gsm).
The wool for production of these comforters was collected from Bactrian camels of Gobi desert (Mongolia). It differs from the sheep wool. Unlike sheep, camels naturally shed their coat every year during the spring molt. Camel hair may be collected by shearing the animals or by gathering the wool by hand during the molting season. Unlike sheep, camels have two types of hair. Camels have long coarse hair called guard hair and soft, fine, short hair called undercoat, camel cashmere or camel down. The guard hair can be up to 15 in. long. The price for the undercoat is significantly higher than the price for the coarse hair. The coarse hairs are separated from the fine hairs by a combing machine.
Two humped Bactrian camels dominating in Mongolia produce high quality wool that is superior to the wool of the camels found in other parts of the world. Mongolian camels grow more hair due to the region’s extremely cold climate. Winters in Gobi desert reach minus 40 degrees F. Likewise, Mongolian camels produce more cashmere (soft fine hair) than their counterparts living in warmer climate zones like Kazakhstan and other countries. Comforters filled with the wool of Mongolian camels are softer and more pleasant.
Camel wool comforters have an exceptional ability to regulate sleepers’ body temperature. Mongolian camels are exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations and their hair protects the animals both from cold and heat.
Moreover, camel hair filled comforters have no cold spots because the filling doesn’t migrate to the edges like it does in down comforters. Feathers easily move inside the down comforters while camel wool batting is one continuous piece that is attached to the cover and doesn’t shift.
