Wool comforters vs. polyester comforters

Have you ever thought about the benefits of wool comforters?

Mankind discovered the benefits of wool long time ago. Items made of wool were used in the ancient world. Historians found 3,400-year-old Egyptian yarn and the graves in Siberia contained fragments of textile dating from the first century B.C.

Unlike polyester filled bedding, wool bedding is

– Chemical free. Wool is natural renewable fiber. Every year animals produce new wool. The production has no adverse impact on the environment.

– Hypoallergenic because wool does not harbor dust mites, mold and mildew. Wool absorbs and releases moisture into the air and thus does not create the damp conditions that molds thrive on. Wool bedding is a perfect solution for allergy and asthma sufferers.

– Wool has natural ability to thermoregulate. It helps maintain similar body temperature irrespective of the surroundings. It keeps you warmer in cold seasons. Wool bedding makes you feel cooler in summer by releasing the body heat, and absorbing and wicking moisture away from your body. The moisture then evaporates in the air. Wool bedding is recommended for those who experience night-sweats or hot flashes. Polyester or cotton bedding accumulates and does not release the moisture. Wool comforters are good solution for partners with different temperature preferences.

– Wool is more insulating than polyester.

– Wool can absorb the sweat from the skin and release it into the air. If it is too hot when we sleep, we sweat, become restless and wake up to throw off the covers. Wool can absorb and release 30 times more moisture than polyester.

– Wool is antistatic which means that your comforter will not have electric build up and will not cling to the skin or shoot sparkles. Polyester fiber creates static electricity and uncomfortably clings to your body. Moreover, fibers that do not generate static attract less dust and lint.

– Wool is inherently antibacterial.

– Wool refreshes itself by airing.

– Wool is safer than polyester. Wool is a natural fire retardant due to a lanolin coating found in wool. Unlike polyester, wool fiber needs very high temperature to catch on fire. In case of fire wool will not melt or stick to the skin. Polyester will do both. Price Charles personally tested the wool’s flammability and this is what he later reported, “Synthetic jerseys produced a dramatic and disconcerting blaze, while their woollen counterparts merely smouldered in relative safety.”

– Wool is biodegradable. When you dispose of an old wool comforter, it will decompose in moist soil in a matter of months, slowly releasing valuable nutrients back into the earth. The synthetic materials stay in landfills for decades. Old wool items can be recycled, for example made into roof insulation.

– Scientific studies show that wool bedding enhances sleep primarily due to the wool’s thermoregulatory and moisture management properties that are absent in polyester based bedding.
